A passport needs two things that pull in opposite directions: safety, and speed of access. Here's how to balance both.
Avoid the 'too safe to find' trap
It's common to store a passport somewhere so secure that locating it becomes its own small project — the back of a wardrobe, inside a rarely-opened box. The safest realistic option is one you'd actually remember and access calmly at 6am before a flight.
A dedicated, consistent spot beats a locked one
A labeled folder in a fixed spot — the same drawer every time — protects against the far more common risk: misplacement, not theft. If you do use a safe, keep the passport in the same position within it every time, not wherever there happened to be room.
Keep a note of the exact spot, not just 'at home'
Recording something as specific as 'top drawer, blue folder, left side' removes the small but real chance of a frantic search the morning of a trip — for you or for anyone else in your household who might need to grab it on your behalf.
