Emergency Document Checklist: What to Grab and Where to Know It Is

In an emergency, the question isn't what documents matter — it's whether you can find them in the next five minutes.

The short list that matters most

Identity documents, health insurance policies, property papers, and any medical records for ongoing conditions are the ones most worth being able to locate in minutes, not hours. Everything else can typically wait.

Prepare the information, not just the pile

An 'emergency folder' with everything physically grouped together is useful, but not everyone keeps one. What matters more is that the location of each document is written down somewhere accessible — so that even without a single physical folder, anyone in the household could find what's needed.

Make sure more than one person knows

A location record that only exists in one person's memory isn't much better than no record at all. Share it — verbally, on paper, or through a tool like this one — with at least one other trusted person in your household.
